Is everyone on your team on the same page? Equally as Engaged?

Communication between internal teams is just as important as your external communication. Providing teams with strategies to improve internal communication reduces friction between team members and across departments, ensures everyone understands the goals and objectives of their respective functions within an organization and that everyone on the team is contributing equally to team success. Review these ideas when you think about building your own internal communication plan.

Manage the Message

Internal communication is a broad topic that includes how leadership communicates across the organization to the day-to-day team and one-on-one meetings between employees. Your internal communication plan should start at the top.

  • Frequent and comprehensive messaging from leadership keeps all employees current on important changes and developments within the organization or across their industry.
  • Your organization should have a documented crisis management plan outlining next steps for the most likely organizational challenges you may face. This could include at minimum a strategy to address a negative public reaction or a communication plan for production issues that will impact your customers. Consider what may go wrong (or right!) and document how your organization will communicate internally.
Managing the internal message is just as critical as the external message.

Reduce Conflict

There are a variety of reasons team members can come into conflict with one another. Differing backgrounds, life stages, opinions, and even communication styles can all prevent teams from effectively communicating. Providing training to employees helps them navigate some of these challenges and in some cases, will prevent conflict from arising in the first place. Training solutions should provide courses on:

  • Proper management techniques for new and established managers
  • Conflict resolution
  • Team building
  • Diversity and workplace respect

Improve Performance

Teams that effectively communicate produce work more efficiently and identify better solutions that solve the challenges facing your organization.

  • Healthy work cultures flourish when everyone knows their contributions matter and that all ideas and opinions are respected
  • Clear direction and understanding of goals and objectives ensures that everyone is working towards the same end result
  • Accountability is enhanced when roles and responsibilities are clearly defined
